Arguably the first porn star, Texas gal Candy Barr began her dancing career as early as the age of 16. She ran away from home when she was 13, and became a stripper in Dallas where she gained the name Candy Barr thanks to her affinity for Snickers candy. This wild child had a signature mop of platinum blonde hair, and was easily recognized in her rather scandalous cowboy outfits. Trouble seemed to always find her, despite her sweet disposition. Candy Barr was imprisoned for a few years in the early ’60s on what she viewed as trumped up marijuana charges, but not before she appealed mightily, raising her rates and draw as an exotic dancer. Barr married three times throughout her life, had a mobster attempt to protect her from jail and even was a key witness in the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald. She resumed performing in the late ’60s, but in her later years Candy Barr preferred not to relive her earlier glories. Candy Barr passed away from complications of pneumonia in 2005 at 70.
