This weekend the burlesque community lost more than the “Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque.” Dubbed such by Harold Minsky, Dixie Evans served as a bridge between the classic bump and grind and the neo-burlesque revival. As founder of the Exotic World Burlesque Museum & Striptease Hall of Fame at an abandoned goat farm in California, Dixie Evans was the first to get up in the middle of the night and tour a guest of the museum through her home (in full burlesque makeup and hair) with the many costumes and memorabilia nailed to the walls. A performer well into her 80s, Dixie Evans was a household burlesque name known for her more than passing resemblance to Marilyn Monroe. She sold out theaters mimicking the Hollywood star. Whenever a film would come out with Monroe, Evans claimed to be first in line to create a number based on the screen idol. Evans even went out on a date with Joe DiMaggio! A blonde bombshell with plenty of sass and sex appeal, Evans performed her first solo burlesque performance in San Francisco. Evans passed away peacefully Saturday. She suffered a stroke earlier this year. Red Hots Burlesque is honoring her August 25 with a School of Shimmy class “Stocking Seduction with Ellion Ness” as a part of Dixie Evans Week.
