This gorgeous lady is flawless, and we’re so happy to feature her for Red Hots Burlesque’s legend of the week…

THE FABULOUS ZORITA
d. Nov. 12, 2001

Considered the original bad girl of burlesque, the Fabulous Zorita was born to strict Methodist parents in Ohio in 1915. By the age of 15 Zorita was considered what she called “built to the hilt,” able to pass as old enough to work stag parties and visit nudist colonies. Discovered at a beauty pageant at the age of 20, and introduced to the burlesque world. Zorita was famous for a number of her signature acts, including her stripping with a live boa constrictor, dancing in front of a rhinestoned spider web with unseen hands of the “spider” removing articles of her clothing, and our personal favorite, her gender-bending half groom/half bride number. She was known to create a stir, walking in public with her snakes before she opened her show the next evening. While Zorita dated men, she had a one-sided crush on fellow burlesque performer Sherry Britton. She never ended up marrying. Easily recognizable with her jet black hair with blonde streaks through it, she became immensely popular for her fierce and risqué numbers. Zorita retired from burlesque in 1954, but owned a number of burlesque clubs in Miami and New York until she retired completely from the burlesque scene in 1974. She lived in Florida breeding Persian cats until she passed away in 2001.
