Gender illusionist extraordinaire and described as a “one-woman whirlwind in six-inch heels,” Zora Phoenix comes to us out of Oregon. This drag dynamo began performing in her youth in Kentucky as a square dance caller, and today Phoenix is the powerhouse behind a host of burlesque shows in Portland that showcase the diversity and variety in burlesque. “As a gender illusionist who is a singer, performer, producer of five monthly burlesque shows and the Executive Director of Portland’s First & Foremost School of Burlesque, I am used to pushing boundaries and encouraging others to re-evaluate their expectations of others, especially in relation to burlesque,” Phoenix tells Red Hots Burlesque. “Whether challenging gender stereotypes, teaching body positivity through striptease, or proselytizing and spreading the Gospel of Glitter… sometimes behaving badly can do others good.” Phoenix uses gender fluidity, live vocals, and comedy to engage her audience. “I have cultivated a style that is engaging, yet still leaving the audience waiting for what the next twist will be – even if the next twist… is the wait for it.”

WHAT TO SEE IN OREGON: “Portland specifically is a foodie haven, providing incredible gastronomical delights, but I’d highly recommend every visit to Oregon include Tillamook cheese, Oregon berries, Salmon, and if you’re into that sort of thing: BEER. If you’re more of a nature/outdoorsy person, put Crater Lake, Astoria, and the coast on your list! Then come back to Portland for one of our many burlesque shows!”
